Birth and Care for the Young

" The Awaited Day Arrives.... "

Birth can usually be detected when the female hamster does not come out of her nest at the usual time. Listen attentively for the high and fine peeping sounds made by the newborns to confirm that she has delivered.

Birth usually takes place at night ( but by experience, it can happen in the wee hours of the morning too ) and lasts about half an hour.

Why Do Mothers Eat Their Young?

Cannibalism is not uncommon and is usually due to:

1) Too frequent breeding: an interval should be allowed
between 2 litters. Continuous breeding will affect the
health conditions of the female.

2) Stillborn or dying youngs: if newborns are dead or dying,
they will get eaten by the mother. Usually if the litter
size is too big, the mother will cannibalise to reduce
the litter size and better the survival rate of the
living youngs.

3) Environmental changes: if the mother feels threatened,
she may eat her babies. Changing of bedding/litter
should be avoided, but replacing the urine corner with
fresh bedding can be done. Perform this carefully
without disturbing the mother and her babies.

What To Do with the Young?

It is important that you be responsible for the animals that you keep and rear. The hamster family can only live together for a short period. It's best to separate the babies from their parents at 3-4 weeks old as they reach maturity at this age and have no objection in accepting siblings for mates. Arrange and provide good homes for the babies as soon as they are weaned.

Diet Watch

Normally after female hamsters have given birth, their appetite increase. To supplement the daily food you give, feeding of greens (vegetables) and milk drops is encouraged. This additional diet helps the mother hamsters in producing milk which the babies will rely on until they are weaned.

Do take note not to leave any vegetables or wet food in the cage as they will likely rot. Hence feeding of greens by hand is advised.

Note: if you have adorable hamster babies you want to give up for adoption, you can email me for posting.

Where will Daddy hamster stay?

It is practically all right to leave the dwarf male hamster together with the dwarf female hamster and her newborns ( they help to babysit! ). Due to stress and exhaustion, the female dwarf may be hostile towards the male ( noticeable by the inactivity of the male ).As long as fighting does not break out, and the family of hamsters are not disturbed, harmony prevails. Take note: any direct contact with the male hamster or the newborns (less than 2weeks) should be avoided as hamsters rely heavily on scents, and by doing any of the above, risk of rejection by the female is rather high.
